BJ's!

Total Before Savings:  $30.40
Total Coupons Used:  $4
Total Cash OOP:  $26.40

2 gallons of 1% Milk - $2.19 ea
3 Quarts of Half & Half - $1.99 ea
1 Double Pack of Wonder Kids - $3.19
2 Pack Motts Apple Juice - $6.89 ($2 off BJ's Coupon) $4.89!
1 15-pk of Scotch Brite Sponges - $9.59 (2 $1/2 MFCs) $7.59!

Okay - things to take from this trip:

The Mott's Apple Juice is next to the BJ's juice.  Mott's is $6.89, BJ's brand is $4.69.  There is a $2 off coupon for the Mott's in this month's mailer.  Brings it down to $4.89 - still more expensive than the BJ's brand.  But wait!  Look closely!  The BJ's brand comes in 96 oz containers.  The Mott's comes in 128 oz containers.  The Mott's ends up costing $2.45 per gallon.  The BJ's brand ends up costing $3.12 per gallon.  Just because generic may look cheaper, doesn't mean it is!

Secondly - I LOVE THE COUPON POLICY AT BJ'S!  I need sponges.  These are the types of things I think BJ's is good for.  I will go through 15 sponges and I have storage for 15 sponges.  I also know that I've never been able to score "free" or cheap sponges during grocery store or drug store sales.  15 sponges at BJ's are $9.59.  Scotch Brite brand.  There were coupons recently for these out there.  So in my stash, I had 2 $1 off 2 Scotch Brite sponges.  I was able to use BOTH coupons on this item because there are 15 sponges in this package!  In theory, if I had 7 of these coupons, I could have gotten $7 off and got 15 sponges for $2.59!  Isn't this policy amazing?  I think so!

Shaw's!

Total Before Savings:  $40.87
Total Coupons Used:  $2.00
Total Cash OOP:  $22.96
Total OYNP Coupons Earned:  $10.00

4 Folgers 39 oz cans - Reg. $9.77, Sale $5.99 (2 $1/2 MFCs)
1 Rice-A-Roni - Reg. $1.79, Sale $1.00

SO...I mistakenly thought the Folgers was more than $10 a can here regular price.  I was wrong.  It is $9.77.  So I grabbed 4 of them and a Rice-A-Roni to pull my PRE-SALE price over $40.  And low and behold - 2 $5 OYNP coupons printed out!  Thanks to the people who post over on the Slick Deals forum for letting us know about this (The circular states "Limit 1 offer per transaction").  I really love Slick Deals, but the forum is extremely busy and there are a TON of posts to sift through.  Great info, but sometimes it can be crazy to navigate.

By the way, I found my Roxie's meat photo - apparently the son put it in a magic folder in my camera.  Not sure how I even got it out, but it appeared with my last upload.  I'll post it to that Roxie's post.

Shaw's!

Just letting you know, the Shaw's Catalina deal (spend $20, get $5 OYNP) is on PRE-SALE prices.  This is pretty much the case with all Shaw's cats.  I'm going to be doing the Folger's Deal to stock up.

Coming Clean About Vegetables!

It took me a long time to admit it - especially to friends and acquaintances who are a lot more on the "nutritional ball" than me - which, by the way, is pretty much everyone.  But I am a frozen vegetable junkie.  I hardly ever buy fresh vegetables - especially in the winter since not much is in season.  I will almost never buy a vegetable if it's not on sale.  Usually vegetables are on sale when they are in season.  I'll buy potatoes and onions (those aren't really "vegetables" though!).  If peppers are a good deal, I buy those - but I don't cook with them - I eat them like apples (my husband thinks this is disgusting).  I got into butternut squash this past fall.  But what I'm realizing is that I hardly ever cook with fresh vegetables.  I whip something out of the freezer to cook or add to whatever I'm cooking.  I don't know why I ever thought this was so "bad" - it's honestly a miracle that we actually do eat some vegetables!

Why do I do this?  Let me count the ways.

1.  Avoiding Rotting Disgust on My Counter.  Whenever I buy fresh vegetables, without doubt, I throw some away.  It just looks good in the store, but then sits on my counter (or refridgerator) for a week and when I finally want to use it, it's usually rotten.  A lady I met shared a tip that when onions are about to go downhill, to chop them up and freeze them. I currently have a lot of frozen onions!!  I have to admit, it's convenient to have those frozen onions on hand and not have to worry about soft spots on the ones laying on my counter.

2.  Price, obviously.  Now you have to be careful though.  If you were to just walk into Shaw's right now, you can get a 10 ounce box of Broccoli for $2.  Fresh broccoli is $1.49 a pound.  At which case, you may say "How is $2 for 10 ounces better than $1.49 for 16 ounces?!?!"  But those frozen boxes (a perfect portion for our family of 2 adults and 2 toddlers) go on sale all the time, there are always coupons out there for them, and you can honestly get them for next to nothing if they are part of a catalina deal.

3.  My lack of cooking skills.  When I do get the urge to buy fresh vegetables, I can't cook them.  I have to whip out my little Better Homes & Garden Cookbook just to figure out how to cook the freshness I just bought.  No matter what I buy, I screw it up (even looking in a cook book) so most gets thrown away.  Frozen vegetables just tell you how many minutes to cook them in the microwave and "voila!" - They are done and delicious!

4.  Great Nutrition!  I guess some will argue, but frozen vegetables can be just as nutritious as fresh vegetables.  Here's an article to show I'm not making this up.  Click HERE.

5.   I Hate Doing Dishes!  Frozen vegetables are great because for the most part, you can just heat them up in the bag they came in!  You don't have to chop anything up - it's already done for you.  So you aren't washing cutting boards, knives or pots.  If you do buy the vegetables in a big bag and need to use something to microwave them in, I highly recommend getting the Pampered Chef's Micro-Cooker!  We have both the small and large one and they are great for cooking vegetables in the microwave (as well as other things too - like my Rice-A-Roni!!).

So I am here to admit that I am not shameful of our consumption of frozen vegetables anymore!  What am I shameful for?  All of the fresh produce I have thrown out in my lifetime "trying" to be a better cook or more healthy.  So now, after writing this (at 7:30 am!), I seem to be having a craving for a fresh ear of corn and some grilled squash!  And how this post relates to bargains, is beyond me! It's just a whole lot of babble!

Shaw's!

I think I'm going to be laying low from Shaw's this week.  We really just don't need anything right now.  I might do the $20 CAT just to stock up on Folger's coffee.

Anyways, I have stumbled across another New Englander blog - WICKED Cool Deals.com   The Wicked Cool author has highlighted this weeks Shaw's deals for you HERE.  Just remember that some deals are regional.  For instance, one Shaw's near me has higher SALES prices than the other!  They are only about 5 miles apart and I'm right smack dab in the middle of them, but their circulars are different - and so are their sales prices!  Not for everything, but for somethings.  Craziness I tell you!

Bernie & Phyl's!

So...did you miss out on that GREAT grocery promotion Bernie & Phyl's was doing last weekend?  Well guess what?  Apparently they are doing it again this weekend!  I've been sick the past few days and just saw an ad on the television - so I went to the trusty internet and there it was!

Here's how it works - buy $999 in qualifying furniture or more at B&P - get $500 in free groceries!  I don't know how it works really (I think you get credited $100 each month for 5 months - I haven't really read it) - but if you need furniture, now is the time to get it!

Dunkin Donuts!

Dunkin Donuts is offering 99 cent Small Iced Teas from now until 3/17/08.  Offer good in Eastern Mass and Southern NH only.  At least that is what my email said!  I was an addict of their "99 cent Small Lattes from 2-5 pm" promo this past fall.  I have never tried their Iced Tea, but it might be a nice afternoon pick me up!

Roxie's!

I took a picture of all the meat I bought at Roxie's, but I let my precious little almost 3 year old "use" my camera.  In about 30 seconds, he deleted my meat picture.  Sorry for the lack of visual - obviously you are crying since you can't see what 23 lbs of meat looks like!  ;)

Update!  I found the meat picture on my camera afterall!

Here we go:
Total OOP:  $37.87

6.97 lbs of boneless, skinless chicken breast - $1.49/lbs - $10.39

5 1-lbs packages of Perdue Ground Turkey Sausage - .69 cents ea (yes!  69 cents for 1 lbs of sausage!)

1 Perdue Dino Nuggets package - $1.99

3.03 lbs of Pork Sirloin Tips - $1.69/lbs - $5.12

4.82 lbs of Pork Spare Ribs - $1.49/lbs - $7.18

2 Pork Tenderloins (2.42 lbs) - $1.99/lbs - $4.52

1.7 lbs of Grapes - $1.49/lbs - $2.53

1.42 lbs of Red Peppers - .99/lbs - $1.41

1 loaf of white bread - $1.39

My last Roxie's Run for meat was January 15th.  Not bad.  I did buy 3 lbs of chicken, 1 pound of steak and 2 lbs of Sausage at Shaw's since then though.  We'll see how long this lasts!

Weekly Menu Try-Out!

I love reading others' blogs because it inspires me.  For instance, Katy at Happily Average has made me realize that I really should use up some of the junk in my cabinets.  Celeste and Kara at Itty Bitty Bistro have started to lure me into the world of homemade stuff and meal planning.   I also stumbled across Gayle at The Grocery Cart Challenge who is trying to spend only $60 a week feeding her family of 6.  I think I do pretty well - but I'm averaging $69 a week now.  Maybe I can bring my average down a little if I use up some of the stock I have in the cabinets.

I am overwhelmed by my boxes of Rice-A-Roni and pounds of chicken breast that I'm going to do a dry run on "meal planning".  One probably starts "meal" planning on a Monday or Sunday - I decided to shake things up a bit and do it on a Wednesday.  Here's what I have come up with:

Wednesday (tonight) - Hungarian Kapusta (I add 1/2 pound crumbled cooked bacon and I cook the cabbage in the bacon grease - it's one of the few things I enjoy making and it's DELICIOUS!) with mashed potatoes and cheesy broccoli.

I made my Kapusta.  The kids would not eat it so they got dino nuggets.  I decided to make canned peas instead of broccoli.  I boiled the potatoes for the mashed potatoes, but did not follow through.  Those are in the fridge awaiting mashing.

Thursday - Leftovers

Husband ate leftover kapusta.  I was really sick and didn't eat anything.  Kids ate hot dogs.  I was so sick it wasn't even funny.  Doubt I'll be making Sweet & Sour Chicken tomorrow because I feel disgusting.  Handling raw chicken will probably make me vomit.

Friday - Sweet & Sour Chicken with Rice

Yeah.  I didn't feel like cooking.  The husband got paid (he gets paid every Friday) and we splurged for pizza.  So Shameful - but it's good to reward yourself every now and then.

Saturday - Leftovers

Spaghetti with tomato sauce and ground turkey sausage.

Sunday - Pork Tips/Starch/Broccoli

Spaghetti with leftover tomato sauce and ground turkey sausage.  I'm going to spice it up tonight by making crescent rolls too.  As you can see, me and this menu planning stuff isn't going too well!

Monday - Ribs/Starch/Broccoli

I made my sweet and sour chicken.  I made up the recipe with stuff I had in the house.  I threw it all in the crockpot - 3 lbs of chicken (this is easily 3+ meals worth), 1 can of crushed pineapple drained, 1 jar of Sweet & Sour sauce, about 3/4 cups chopped onions, some frozen brocolli and corn, I threw in some crushed red pepper.  Then I made rice and it was delicious.

Tuesday - Tuna Helper

Leftover Sweet and Sour Chicken

I may come back to this post to modify it.  I really don't like setting goals for myself because it's hard to stick to goals.  I'm not a dedicated person!  ;)  I'm doing well reporting my grocery spending because it interests me.  Cooking does not interest me.

Crazy 8!

Crazy 8 has a lot of toddler clothes on clearance (shirts starting at $1.99 for both boys and girls!).  If you have never ordered from them before, sign up for their email alerts and you'll get a coupon for $10 off any purchase of $30 or more.  They have standard $5 shipping on any order.

I've ordered from them before and they do have really great clothes for the wee little ones!

Shaw's!

Total Before Savings:  $42.55
Total Coupons Used:  $2.10
Total OYNP Coupons Used:  $20

10 Starkist Tuna - .80 cents each

2 Shaw's Shredded Cheese - $1.99 ea ($1/2 Store Coupon)
1 Shaw's Hot Dogs - $2.79
2 Hormel Bacon - BOGO @$5.49
Mentos Gum - $1.50 (.55/1 MFC DOUBLES) .40 cents

I could have saved more if I bought the tuna in pouches - there were MFCs in the Red Plum this week (B2G1 Free).  But honestly, I have this unusually weird fear of tuna in pouches.  It just irks me the wrong way.  I think it's from the MREs I had to eat in the Marines.

Overall, not exceptionally great - sure, I used my OYNP coupons on some things I actually needed, but I only used $2 in coupons!  And the Mentos gum was not needed!!  That's so not like me!  It was just kind of a blah week.

Quizno's!

Thanks to Money Saving Mom - she let us know you can get a free sub from Quizno's!!  Click HERE for details!  Free food is delicious food!!!!

Walmart!

I did a quick stop into Walmart to get juice and bread last night.  I guess I should document all grocery purchases on the blog to keep me honest.  For instance, I did buy a loaf of bread at Target two weeks ago - I didn't blog about it (because really, who cares?) but I did add it into my grocery total.  I never really "grocery shopped" at Walmart before.  I mean, I'll grab goldfish, juice or bread if I'm in there already, but nothing spectacular.  The bread was crazy expensive!  My Wonder Bread (which I usually get as a double pack at BJ's for $2.99) was $2.23 a loaf!  73 cents more a loaf than BJ's!  The 96 oz container of Apple Juice was $1.97 - which is about 35 cents cheaper than a container of BJ's juice.  So it all sort of evens out...

2 96 oz containers of Apple Juice - $1.97 ea
1 loaf of Italian Bread - $1.97

Total:  $5.91

Sears!

If you are in the market for stocking up on winter gear for next year, check out Sears!  All their Land's End clearance is now 50% off the clearance price!  Toddler fleeces were $6.49!  They had twin sheet sets for $12.49.  Women's coats galore!  Like they were on clearance for $19.99 - so with the 50% off, you're talking $9.99 for a new coat!!  All Land's End brand.   All practically a steal!  Unfortunately, I do not think this deal is going on online.

Also, if you are ever in a store like Sears, it's good to price check the items before you check out! I have an obsession with price checkers - I always want to make sure what I want to buy is the price I'm thinking I'm going to be getting (this prevents me from getting all heated in front of the cashiers - plus, my kids usually start acting up at the register so I'm not always paying attention to the prices).  My husband is the blue collar type and I came across a big hefty Craftsman jacket - Reg. price $99.99, on clearance for $59.99.  Not great, but I scanned it at the price scanner and it was ringing up $29.99!  The "regular" Sears stuff isn't an additional 50% off so I felt like a bandit buying this!  After I found that find, I tried my luck with some kids clothes but they were all ringing up the clearance sticker price.

I got my Craftsman jacket (I bought a new one for him for Christmas and I think it was $74!!) and had hopes of storing it in the attic for next Christmas for him - but I couldn't hide my big bargain find and showed him.  Oh well.  By the way, that's not my husband in that picture - but wouldn't it be nice if it was?  ha ha ha!

K-Mart!

My "favorite" discount chain is having their "Double Coupon" extravaganza this week!  My K-Mart flyer is advertising Double Manufacturer's Coupons (Up to $2) this week.  South Shore Massachusetts here!  For whatever reason, K-Mart doesn't do national deals like this.   They all seem to vary.  Check your weekly ad or check Kmart.com to see if they are doubling in your neck of the woods.

Although great deals to be had, I will be passing this up.  I've decided that every time I go into K-Mart, my stress level raises so much that my blood pressure is through the roof and it's going to eventually give me a heart attack.  The doctor co-pays far surpass any savings I would receive at K-Mart's double coupon extravaganzas.  Therefore, I will spare my health and let my devoted readers take advantage.

Restaurant.com

Miss the last Restaurant.com promo?  You're in luck!  Another is here!  Enter code DINE at checkout and get 80% off your purchase!  A $25 gift certificate which they sell for $10 is a whopping $2!!!  You can pay with PayPal and print the certificate off right at your printer!  What a great deal!  Offer expires 2/28/09 so you have a good week to make your purchases!

Bargain Formula Shopping!

One of the reasons I became so gung-ho on coupons is because of Baby Formula!  I guess a true "thrifty" person would strive to make breastfeeding work - not only for the nutritional benefit but for the cost savings.  My first son was born in the spring of 2006.  Since everyone was pushing breastfeeding, I figured I'd give it a shot.  I thought it was kind of easy.  I didn't have any real issues and my son took to it right away.  But honestly, I just didn't like it.  It just wasn't a good fit for me and I didn't want to force it.  If you're from the La Leche League, please don't hunt me down and hurt me!  If you are formula feeding by choice, or not - there are ways to save!  Hopefully I can help you!

Around the 3 month mark with my first son, I told my husband "Yeah, this isn't working, I'm switching him to formula."  The husband's response was something like "Ahhh.  We're kind of poor already.  You made us buy that $200 breast pump which you used about 3 times.  Now you want to give it up."  Me, "yup!"  So I walked up to CVS and bought one of those 32-oz Ready-To-Feed Formula bottles for $6.29.  That's when I thought "ooh.  Maybe breast is best!"

But I did some research (I found out I wouldn't be a horrible mother if I gave my baby powdered formula) and signed up for offers from Similac, Enfamil, Nestle Good Start and even Wal-Mart brand formula.  It wasn't long after that the samples and coupons were aflowing to my doorstep.  Friends who were breastfeeding gladly gave me their formula checks and samples.

Around this time, I went to CVS for something or other and on the bottom of my receipt was a coupon for $4 off any $20 purchase!  I was like "Whoa!  A can of formula is $20.99 - that's $4 off!"  Then I thought, "But wait, I have that $5 formula check at home!"  And wait again - I just got my Spring ECBs and have $2.50 off any purchase!  My $21 can of formula became $9.50!  Thus, beginning my obsession with stacking coupons.  And my obsession with working the CVS ExtraCare Buck program.

Tips for saving on formula

-Sign up at each manufacturer's website to receive samples and coupons.

-If you have friends who are one brand and you're on another, swap coupons with them.

-If you are part of a moms' group, ask around and see if anyone has coupons they aren't going to be using.  Somehow, formula companies seem to get every new mom's info and sends stuff to them even if they are breastfeeding.

-Don't discount generic formula.  It's FDA regulated these days.  Son #2 was fed mostly BJ's brand formula and he hasn't grown any extra fingers or gone cross eyed yet.   A friend of mine used Kirkland Brand (at Costco).  Her daughter seems to be doing just fine and hasn't grown any extra limbs either.  Another friend used WalMart brand - and again - nothing wrong with her little girl either.  If you compare the ingredients of generics and name-brand, they are pretty much the same.  (If you have a gassy baby or a baby that requires extra nutrients, you might have to stick to a name brand).

-Cost comparison - a big "double can" of BJ's formula is $19.99.  The same size can of Similac at BJ's is $38.99.   Almost twice as much.

-Check to see if your insurance will cover any formula - some pediatricians will write prescriptions for the higher end formula.

-Ask your pediatrician for samples and/or coupons.

-If you're dead set on breastfeeding before your baby arrives, you'll still probably have your hospital ask you if you want a formula bag.  You can (and probably should) pass it up, but it might be wise to take the samples and either store them at your in-laws or in a spot in your house where you won't be tempted to whip them out.  Down the line, you might find breastfeeding won't work (or you find you might want to "cross over to the dark side") and you might wish you had those samples to test out.

-If you find a good price, stock up!  We'd go through about 1 25.7 oz can a week.  A BJ's can would last about 2 weeks.  You'll be feeding your baby formula until about the 1 year mark so check expiration dates and know how much you'll need.

-In my formula days, I'd get MFCs from the Shaw's cash register that were GOOD!  Like $15 off 2 cans of formula.   I remember using these on the smaller 14 oz cans, couple them with the formula checks and get them for practically nothing.

-Check the quantity of formula in the can.  I remember Target would occasionally have these promotional cans  of Similac that were about 31 oz (a normal can is 25.7 oz).  It was the same price as the 25.7 oz can but you'd get about 20% more formula in the can.  You can use your formula checks on these too.

-A lot of the formula checks were $5 off any product.  If I had a lot stocked up and the Ready-To-Feeds would go on sale for $5 ea, I'd grab one.   So a 32-oz Ready-To-Feed would be free.  These were good to have on hand if we were taking a day trip or spending the day over a family member's house.

Again, I'm not encouraging you to give up breastfeeding for formula feeding, but if you are formula feeding, there are always ways to save!!

COST: Home-Made Vs. Convenience?

I'm the Queen of Convenience.  I hate to cook.  My microwave is my best friend.  New recipes frighten me because I will mess up.  It's inevitable.  No matter how easy a recipe is - it usually never comes out right.  My husband blames this on my inability to follow simple directions.  I think I'm just a bad cook.  Most of my pots and pans just sit in my cabinet for looks.  Only about 3 get use on a regular basis - a toaster oven cookie sheet to heat up my Pillsbury Crescent rolls, a pot to cook my Rice-A-Roni, and a skillet to cook my hamburger for Taco Kits.

Today I was reorganizing all my practically free soup and noticed a box of Ronzoni Smart Taste elbows with a recipe on the back for Macaroni & Cheese.   It looked divine and I had all the ingredients.  It seemed so easy, so I made it!  Surprisingly, it came out great!  Then I thought "this wasn't expensive at all!"  So that's why I'm here.  How much did my wonderful homemade Mac & Cheese cost me?

1 pkg Ronzoni Smart Taste elbows - $1.50 ($1/1 MFC) .50 cents
3 Tbsp butter - Used "ICBINB" which was kind of "free" a couple weeks ago. I'll say .10 cents for my measly portion.
3 Tbsp Flour - .15 cents (guessing here!)
2 1/2 cups milk - .35 cents (16 cups of milk in a gallon - gallon was $2.19)
2 cups of shredded Cheddar Cheese - $2 (Sorrento 2/$5 ($1/2 MFC)
1/2 cup bread crumbs - .07 cents  (3.75 cups of bread crumbs in container - .50 for container after coupons)
1/2 tsp salt & 1/8 tsp pepper - I'm not figuring this out!!!

The recipe called for minced onion but I didn't want to deal with stinky onion juice on my hands today (yes, I do have onions on hand!).  This is when the husband will chime in, "Why don't you just follow the directions Becky?!?!"

(For the real recipe and directions, click HERE)

Overall, this recipe cost me:  $4.17.  I could (and have) gotten the shredded cheese cheaper.  This week, Shaw's shredded cheese is on sale for $1.99 plus a coupon printed from their website for $1 off 2.  So $1.49 for the 8 oz package of shredded cheese! - Would have made this recipe $3.67!

My convenience food (15-pack of Kraft Mac & Cheese) at BJ's runs me $9.99.  .67 cents each.  This recipe is probably about the equivelant to 3 or 4  boxes (My boys and I ate about 1/3 of the recipe - the three of us can easily polish off a box of Mac & Cheese with no questions asked).  But then you have to factor in the butter and milk used to prep it - so you're looking at about $3 - $4 for 3-4 boxes of Kraft Mac & Cheese.  This "homemade" recipe is 100 times better than the boxed kind. It's simple, my kids loved it, and with my bargain hunting, just about the same price as the easy stuff!  I'll spend the time and effort to make this again!  Afterall, I am just a homemaker and us homemakers are suppose to be slaving away by the stove everyday.  It was fantabulous!  Good bye Kraft Mac & Cheese - Hello Ronzoni!

Walgreens!

WALGREENS!  TOMORROW!!  20 Free Prints with no purchase required!  JUMP ON THIS PEOPLE!!!!!  Click HERE to order TOMORROW (Friday, February 20th)!  Enter code ONEDAY.  Many thanks to Celeste at Itty Bitty Bistro for bringing this fabulous offer to my attention!

Restaurant.com!

I ordered a gift certificate from Restaurant.com the last time they were running a promo.  We finally used it and it worked like a charm!!  They are running a 70% off promo now by using the code PREZ.  We got a $25 gift certificate for $3!  The restrictions on the restaurant we got this time around was that we have to spend a minimum of $35 and there will be an 18% gratuity added to the pre-discounted check.

The place I got our certificate from has FRIED SEAFOOD (my favorite!), a good kids menu and I'm sure something good for the husband.  If we stay close to $35, we will pay $13 out of pocket with about $6.50 in tip - So $18.50 for a night out with the kids instead of $42-ish!  Honestly, we pay more than $18.50 when we get pizza once a week (it's usually $20-ish since we have the need for buffalo wings too).  Also, I went through Cashbaq.com to access Restaurant.com and they give you back 25% of your purchase price.  I think it's pre-code price ($10 for a $25 Gift Certificate), so I'll be getting $2.50 credited to my Cashbaq account!  $16 for dinner out for a family of 4!!  Value-tastic!!!

This offer expires today so jump on at it!  Also note, a lot of these restaurants have restrictions on their promos (can't be used on Weekends, minimum purchase requirements, gratuity added, etc).  So just read the fine print before you commit!

Bye Heather & Newbie Refresher!

Last night as I was posting, I noticed that all these people were coming to my blog from Heather's Blog - Living on $1500 For A Year (Thanks FEEDJIT!).  So I was wondering "What? Is this girl giving people money to visit my blog or something?"  So I go over there to find out that she was just on FOX 25 in Boston!  I envy this lady only due to the fact that I love me some Fox 25 News!  From Maria to Gene - and Frank to Shirley!  They are all awesome!!  My friend Christine can attest to my love for Fox 25! ;)

Well anyways - Unfortunately, Heather shut her blog down for personal reasons.  It was a great blog and a great goal!  If Heather is reading this, I wish you the best of luck continuing forward with your goal even if you aren't blogging about it.  Best of luck to you and your family in the future!

If you are just some random person looking to get into couponing, I wrote a basic blog post about couponing a while ago...it's probably best to start there if you're thinking about trying to coupon!

Trying to give people the basics on how to use coupons:

General Coupon Tips

Here's a more recent post trying to explain how to do Shaw's Catalina sales:

Shaw's Catalina Tips

They aren't good but they might do the trick for some.  I love talking coupons!  I need a life!!

Shaw's!

One of the things I haven't really hit on a lot during my posts is that 2 toddlers are with me during 99% of my grocery shopping trips.  I know shopping with 2 toddlers is hard.  Grocery shopping with 2 toddlers and using coupons is even harder.  Furthermore, grocery shopping with 2 toddlers and trying to shop by using a coupon for practically every single item you intend to purchase is almost impossible.  Screw-ups are bound to happen - and I seem to screw up.  A lot.

My friend Lori told me this morning that she got 2 $10 OYNP coupons because she bought 20 items listed (she only shops with 1 toddler so she can do these things without screwing up!).  Score!  I'd do a big trip tonight!  So I get all my stuff, get to the register and I thought I'd have $30 OYNP coupons printed (I did the ConAgra deal too) - but only $20 printed.  I only paid $17 OOP and just chalked it up to bad karma and thinking one of the SKUs of the items wasn't inputted properly.  After getting home, I realized that it wasn't bad karma but me being a dummy and only buying 19 items on the deal - with a stray little Chex Mix coupon in my bag.  Duh!

ConAgra Deal

10 Healthy Choice Soups - $1 ea (3 $1/3 MFC Peelies there) $7
Gave me $10 OYNP

Buy 10 Deal (tried to 2X it - but I obviously can't add)

2 Betty Crocker Cake Mixes - $1.25 ea (No MFCs - gearing up for birthday season)
2 B.C. Frostings - $1.67 ea ($1/2 MFC)
3 Warm Delights - $1.67 ea (3 .55/1 MFC DOUBLES) .57 ea!
1 Chex Mix (should have grabbed 2) - $2 (.60/1 MFC DOUBLES) - .80 ea!
1 Cheerios Mix - $2 (.60/1 MFC DOUBLES) - .80 ea!
2 Cookie Crisp - $2.50 ea (2 .75/1 MFC DOUBLES) - $1 ea!
4 Grands Biscuits - $1.25 ea (2 .50/2 MFC DOUBLES) - .75 ea!
4 Pillsbury Ready-to-Bake Cookies - $2.50 (2 .75/2 MFC DOUBLES) $1.75 ea!

1 Mentos Gum - .75 (.55/1 MFC DOUBLES!) Money Maker of .35 cents!

Things I have learned from this trip:

- I thankfully checked the expiration date on the Pillsbury Ready-To-Bake Cookies!  The chocolate chip ones all expired Dec. 8, 2008!  Gross!  Make sure you check the dates!  The ones I got all expire the end of April 2009.  These can be frozen too!

- Basic addition is a good skill to possess while couponing.

-There is still one more day of this sale!  For whatever reason, if you buy 10 Healthy Choice Soups, you get a $10 OYNP.  They are on sale for $1 ea this week!  A lot of stores have the peelie machine right in front of them that have $1/3 MFCs.  Grab 3 of them.  Grab 10 cans of soup.  Pay $7 OOP and get $10 OYNP!!!  Is that simple or what?

-  If you're really into couponing or aspire to be, it's good to think of it as a game of sorts.  A part of me is mad at myself for not grabbing just one more item in the sale, but really, what can I do?  I screwed up but I still got a great deal.  It wasn't that long ago that I thought spending $1 on a can of soup was a great deal.  It wasn't all that long ago that I would drop $100 on a trip to the grocery store and now, I can barely ever break $50.  So yeah, Shaw's might have won this hand, but I'll be back for my revenge!!!

-  Maybe my store and cashiers are not the "norm" - but it seems as if I'm the only person around my area that works these catalina deals.  Why?  For starters, my Shaw's is still overly stocked with everything in both the ConAgra and "Buy 10, Get $10" Catalina deals.  I'll see crazy people just buy 3 or 4 cans of Healthy Choice soup and I want to shake them and say "Lady!  Buy 6 more, grab those coupons that are BLINKING right in front of you and you will MAKE MONEY on this purchase!"  I refrain myself from doing this though.  And lastly, every time an OYNP coupon pops out at the end of my transaction, the cashiers are always "Oh wow!  You got some coupons!" as if they have never seen them pop out of their handy dandy little machine before.  But again, it's probably just my store.

Carter's!

If you have kids or know someone who does have kids, you should be checking out the Carter's Outlet stores!  They are few and far between, but there are usually a ton of great deals at these places.  Not only do they have great clearance deals, but they are always throwing you coupons for $10 off a$50 purchase.  Sign up HERE to receive coupons via email!

Here's a list of where the New England stores are (Sorry Rhode Island,  you are out of luck!).  Also, Carter's is nationwide, so there are stores all across the country - and I think they are one of the few companies who are actually expanding and not downsizing!  More stores are coming!

Spotlight: NH/VT Discount Shopping turned into Organic Food Babble!!

Katie, out in the VT/NH border area wanted to pass along some great shopping spots!  Katie has an issue that I think many have - she wants to eat organic/healthy but also stay on a budget.  Usually the word "organic" and "budget" don't appear together.  Katie recommends Stan's in Westmoreland, NH & Mr. G's Discount Food Warehouse in North Walpole, NH.  If you know of some bargain spots in your neck of New England, feel free to email me and let me know!

I am the worst when it comes to "healthy" eating or anything organic.  Usually if I see something has the word "Organic" on it, I usually put it down and scout out something that says "Processed with Many, Many Chemicals".  I look like a deer in headlights whenever I step foot into a Whole Foods.  I don't even go down the "Wild Harvest" isle at Shaw's because it's just too healthy for me to even look at.   But I know most people prefer healthy or organic stuff, so where have you found great deals on organic or "healthy" stuff?  What things can people buy organically but still stay on budget?  And lastly, have you ever come across ANYTHING organic that was actually less expensive than something non-organic?

Shaw's!

The husband ran out of Coke and demanded more.  If I don't buy it, I know he'll just go to a convenience store everyday and drop at least $1.50 on a 20 oz bottle.  It's better to just buy the 12 packs.  I figured I'd do another CAT deal while I was there.

2.22 lbs of Cabbage - $1.75 ($1/1 Shaw's Coupon) .75!

2 Chex Mix Bars - $2.50 (2 .60/1 MFCs DOUBLE) $1.40 ea
1 Nature Valley Bars - $2.50 (.50/1 MFC Doubles) $1.50
3 Fruit Roll-up Stickerz - $2 ea (3 .50/1 MFCs DOUBLE) $1 ea
4 Fruit Snacks - $2 ea (2 $1/2 MFCs) $1.50 ea

OOP:  $13.30
OYNP Received:  $15.00

I'm not sure why I got the Nature Valley coupon ($1.50).  I only bought one box, but it still spit one out to me.  Since I bought 5 boxes or more of fruit snacks, my other CAT was $3.50.

By the way, the Chex Mix Bars that are Turtle flavored are heaven!  They are like candy bars but without the "candy bar" name!  Between those and the Grands Biscuits, I'll be gaining some serious weight this next month!!

Cheap Diapers (Thanks to Swap Savers & Diapers.com)!

Cheryl at Swap Savers wrote up a great scenario to get Jumbo Packs of Pampers for $5.79 at Diapers.com!  Click HERE for details!  Many thanks to Cheryl for taking the time to write up the post!

I actually did this order.  I have never ordered from Diapers.com before so I thought this was the perfect opportunity to try them out.  $5.79 per pack is a pretty good price - I guess you could get them cheaper at CVS if they are on an ECBs deal - but the CVS diaper deals have been so blah lately.

Here's the low down - First time customers get $10 off any order of $49 (and FREE SHIPPING!).  Buy 5 at the sale price of $10.99.  Pampers will give you $1 off (see Cheryl's post).  Then there is a Parents Magazine Mail-In-Rebate for $14.97.  5 packs of Pampers comes to $43.95 before the rebate and $28.98 after.  Huggies will run you $44.95 pre-rebate & $29.98 after.

I'm pretty sure my 18 month old will be in diapers for well over a year, so I find it's good to stock up on diapers when the price is right.  I probably have about 450 diapers on hand now - but we'll use them!  Unfortunately, I had to add almost $29 to my monthly grocery tab!  But it's worth it I tell you!

Also - I went through Cashbaq.com to enter Diapers.com since they'll give me a rebate.  It's just a measly 1% (.43 cents!  Woohoo!), but hey, every cent counts!

CVS!

We're kind of starting a tradition here.  When I was younger, my grandfather used to give me a really pretty decked out heart for Valentine's Day - but he'd always give it to me a couple days after Valentine's Day.  Why?  Because they were on clearance!  So we've (okay, I...) decided that our new tradition will be to go to CVS on February 15th and we can each pick out our own heart (at 50% off!).  My husband of course had to pick the largest heart he could find.  How can you blame him though?!

Total Before Savings:  $53.70
Total Coupons Used:  $10.00
ECBs Used:  $10.00
Cash OOP:  $11.65

2 SpongeBob Hearts (not pictured) - Reg. $1.29 ea, Sale .65 ea

2 Colgate Totals - $2.99 ea (2 $1/1 MFCs) $1.99 ea ($2.99 ECBs on ea!)
3 Dole Fruit Bowls - 3/$5 (Filler to get to $30 - I think I have an MFC here for them but oh well).
1 Revlon Pencil Sharpener (needed!) - $4.39 ($2/1 CVS Coupon, $1/1 MFC)

When we got to the store, I scanned my card at the coupon center and a $5/$30 popped out!  Woohooo!  I knew we were buying a bunch of candy and I needed the Pencil Sharpener.  So I needed to get to $30 so I could use this coupon since I was going to be spending close to $30 anyways.   That's where the Dole Fruits came in.  Even with no MFC, it's a pretty good price.

Also, I wanted to point out something.  The husband was with me at the store.  There was the Revlon sharpener for $4.39 and a CVS sharpener for $2.49.  He says "Just get the CVS one, it's cheaper!".  But I showed him my CVS coupon for $2 off any Revlon Beauty tool coupon and my $1 off any Revlon Beauty tool MFC.  So my $4.39 Revlon sharpener became $1.39.  Cheaper than the CVS brand.  He only wishes he could be as awesome as me.

Working Catalina Sales at Shaw's 101!

Talking to some people, I realized that some are lost when it comes to working these sales at Shaw's that boast "Buy THIS Get $10 Of Your Next Purchase (OYNP) Coupon" or whatnot.  I'm going to try to simplify how I do this.  These sales are also called catalinas.  Obviously most people can understand "Oh yeah, I buy 10 things and I get a coupon for $10 off my next order" - but if you work MFCs with them, you get them for next to nothing.

1.  Get Your Ad!  Okay, first, get your Shaw's ad if you have it.  It might be easier to understand my babble if you have some sort of visual.  On the back, there is a big thing that says "Buy 10 participating items, get $10 off your next purchase".  When I come across these, I sort of scan the ad for a minute or two, and for some odd reason, I can memorize most of what is part of these things.  Then I go to my coupon organizer and I pull out every single MFC that correlates to the sale - whether I want to buy it or not.  Then they are all in a nice little pile for me.

2.  Break Down the Prices!  Then I break down the prices and write them on the circular - since they put everything as 4/$10 ($2.50), 5/$10 ($2), 4/$5 ($1.25), 3/$5 ($1.67), 3/$6 ($2).  In my head, I have a goal to make those 10 items cost me as close to $10 as possible after the MFCs - so it's like I'm "breaking even" between fronting the money, but getting my OYNP coupon.   If I can get it below $10, it's like I'm "making money."

3.  Group Your Coupons!  Then I group the coupons so the quantities equal 10 (for instance, if I plan on using 5 $1/2 MFCs, that would be one group because those 10 items will give me a $10 OYNP coupon).  I mentally try to make the first 2 or 3 groups "really good" - things we actually use with high MFC amounts.   Paper clips are good for this step.  With all of my coupons, I can do this deal about 8 times if I wanted to.  I probably will not do it that many times.  After I do the deal with my "good" coupons, I weight the pros and cons with doing it again with my remaining coupons.  I ask myself "Is it a good deal?"  "Do I actually want these things?"

Here's How I Figure Out My Scenarios:

I have a notebook where I just scribble grocery gibberish (pardon my 3rd grade level handwriting).  I know for this one, I need to buy 10 in one transaction to get my $10 coupon.  So I write what I'm getting, the price of it, and the coupons that go along with it.  My Shaw's doubles all MFCs 99 cents and under.

I add up the pre-coupon price, add up the coupons, and subtract the coupon total from the price.  This becomes my Out-Of-Pocket (OOP) amount.  But remember, for each of these groups, I'll get a coupon for $10 of my next purchase.  In a way, you can think of it as me "making .15 cents" on my first round, and only spending .28 cents on the second round.  I also double check to make sure I actually calculated in 10 items and not 9.

This probably looks so hard and confusing, but really, it's not.  I usually work these scenarios while standing at the kitchen counter while my kids are playing or whatnot.  If I have to take a break, I do.

I also want to point out another thing about why coupons are WONDERFUL!  Pretend you didn't even get the $10 coupon - just using the coupons on my first round saves me 43% off SALE prices!  43% is a lot!  Round 2 coupon savings is 38%.  Some people will say "What's the big deal?  It's just 50 cents, it's just $1, it's too time consuming, blah blah blah."  Saving 43% off already reduced prices is fantastic!  As long as you'll actually use the products that is!

4.  Go to Shaw's and SAVE!  Now that you have your list and your coupons, you are ready to head to Shaw's and save!

Other Tips on Catalinas:

Pay special attention to the lower priced items - for instance - if you don't have any coupons, you can get 5 Grands rolls and 5 Betty Crocker Cake Mixes.  You pay $12.50 out of pocket, but walk away with $10 off your next purchase.  That's a great deal in itself.

You can usually use these OYNP coupons to purchase items that will generate more OYNP coupons (think of rolling CVS's ExtraCare Bucks).  However, Shaw's does have the right to not accept the OYNP coupons when you are going to be earning more.  Just be prepared to fork over the cash in case the cashier and manager say "Sorry Ma'am, you cannot use this coupon on your purchase."

Read the fine print under all the pretty pictures.  There are products that are included in this sale that are not pictured!  Progresso Soup ($1.33 ea), Romano's Macaroni Grill kits ($3.33), Chex Mix, Cheerios Snack Mix, Gardetto's Snack Mix, & Bugles.  I'm not sure how much the snack mixes are on sale for this week.  I found out the Soup and Romano's by looking through the circular.

Sometimes you can work 2 deals in the same transaction.  For instance, if you bought 20 of these sale items, the register might pop out 2 $10 OYNP coupons.  I usually don't try this unless there is confirmation out here in internet land.  The SlickDeals forum is a good place to find out if this works or not.  Again, I do not know for certain if you can double up this sale yet - so don't try it and blame me if it doesn't work!  ;)

If you won't use these products - either don't do the deal or do it and donate it to a food pantry!  Just because something is a good deal for some, doesn't mean it's a good deal for others.  Our food consumption is pretty much based around sales and bargains.  I know most people actually eat what they want to eat! ;)  If you know that you will never ever eat Grands Biscuits, just don't buy them!

If you look on my side bar, Deal Finding Mom posts a lot of what is on sale at Shaw's (God Bless her!  I don't think I can find the time for that one!).  She also posts links to print coupons for almost everything that is part of the sale (again, what a wonderful blogger!).  Check her out if you want to print coupons for any of these items!

Hopefully I did not confuse you even more.  Let me know if you have any questions or are lost - explaining things in a simple manner is not something I'm good at.  But I try!

Snapfish! - A Surprise!!!!

I got the following in my inbox from Snapfish.  Apparently there is some "super great deal" coming my way and probably many other Snapfish users.  I'll keep you updated on Saturday as to what the big hooplah is all about!

As one of our best customers, we wanted to let you know that you'll be getting an amazing President's Day Weekend deal on all of our gifts!

It won't last long. So get your favorite products ready and keep an eye out for an email this Saturday, Feb. 14, with our exclusive 3-day offer.

JCPenney's!

I joined the JC Penney's Reward club a couple months ago.  I actually haven't stepped foot in a JC Penney store since I joined, however, I will be doing so tomorrow!  Why?  Because they emailed me a coupon for $10 off any purchase of $10 or more!  Woohoo!  Something free for me!!

I'm not sure if you'd get this coupon if you joined right now, but if you want to join to get random savings like this, you should do so!  Click HERE for details!  If you link a credit card with your JC Penney reward number, once you accumulate $250 in purchases, you'll get a $10 credit toward any purchase.  I pretty much just joined in the hopes of them mailing me coupons!

A Whole Week Without Shaw's!

I went an entire week without shopping at Shaw's!  Woohoo!  My grocery budget is extremely below goal but that's okay.  They're doing a "Buy 10 items, get $10 OYNP coupon" this coming week.  If you work your manufacturer's coupons with it, it's pretty good.

For instance, I found 10 items that matched up to MFCs so that my total OOP will be $10.68 - but it will generate $10 OYNO, so that's outstanding!

Also, if you want to take part in this deal, make sure you read everything that is included (I'm talking the deal on the back page).  There are items that are included that aren't pictured.

My Own Christmas Club!

I've given myself a couple random financial goals for this New Year.  I share some when I feel like it!  ;)  My big one is my $5,000 on groceries and whatnot.  Another little one I have is saving money for Christmas gifts every month.

We have a basic old savings account - which had a whopping $25 in it.  It just came with the territory when we opened up our checking account and money market account years and years ago.  It's just been sitting there.  So this new year, I have decided that I will put $50 in it every month.  Usually around the 1st when I'm paying bills.  So it's up to $125 already!  Woohoo!  If I am good about doing my monthly deposit, come Christmas, we'll have a chunky $625 that we can withdraw at the ATM to buy gifts.  I have to admit though, I don't think we've ever come close to spending that much on gifts.

This goes against my "Credit Card Reward" obsession, but that's okay.  The past 7 years I've had to hear it from my husband that it's not fair that I can look at the credit card statements online to see what stores he's been shopping at for me.  I don't even think he knows what credit cards we have - Other than the "one to use" and the one "in case of emergencies".  Poor guy.

I've never really done this before but I'm hoping the lack of a huge credit card balance spike in December and January provides a less stressful holiday for me.  I'll report my findings next year!

How Much Did Dinner Cost?

The past two nights, we ate the same thing.  I was thinking about how frugal I was - making something last night and eating the leftovers tonight (well I made new spaghetti!).  I wonder how much I spent on it though....

1 lbs of Johnsonville Ground Sausage - 2 for $5 ($1/2 MFC) - $2
1 box of Barilla Pasta - $7.59 for 8 at BJ's - .95 cents
1 1/2 jars of Ragu pasta sauce - With all the OYNP coupons, these were practically free, but I'll say .50 cents ea - .75
4 pieces of Wonder Bread each night - 7.5 cents a slice, so... .60 cents

We did use some practically free "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" and some grated Parmesan Cheese, but since I over estimated the pasta sauce, I'll throw that cost in there.

Total for both nights:  $4.30

Each Night:  $2.15 total for 2 adults and 2 toddlers.

That's not too bad considering the meal was extremely tasty.  Also, everything was name brand.  No generics (except our parmesan cheese - that was good old Shaw's brand).

Cosmo & Diet Dr. Pepper!

About a month ago, I was fortunate enough to stumble across a blog post which enabled me to get a free 1 year subscription to Cosmopolitian magazine (as if I don't have enough useless junk to entertain me!).

Well I was reading through it and low and behold - on page 39 of the February edition there is a coupon for a free 2-Liter of Diet Dr. Pepper!  Woohoo!!

Did you not get your free subscription to Cosmo?  Boo Hoo.  You can have mine when I'm done reading all the goodness!  But if you want the coupon, scope out your doctor's office waiting room for the coupon!  I'm so cheap that I probably would tear this coupon out of a community magazine!  So bad...so bad!!  ;)

Wendy's!

We recently went through the drive-thru of Wendy's (the husband was craving a hamburger - who am I kidding?  I was too!).  I noticed that if you donate a $1 (yes, a measly buck!) to the Jack Williams Wednesday's Child Fund (a charity for kids who need to be adopted) then Wendy's will give you a coupon book for 10 FREE Frosty Jrs.!  I think these are on the menu for 99 cents.  And you get 10 of them!  The offer is good in MA, RI, NH and VT.  The coupons expire 6/1/09.  This will be great for the kids this spring!  Plus, you are donating to a great cause.

Buy.com!

If you are in the market for anything big, you need to check out Buy.com!  We had great experiences with this website and they have FABULOUS deals!  For instance, this 47" (HUGE!) Westinghouse Flatscreen TV (1080 pixals) is listed at $769 (reg. $1899) AND it has FREE SHIPPPING!!!  That is fabulous!  They have a bunch of items for sale at this site (jewelry, cameras, clothing, etc).  If you go through a rebate site (like my favorite - Cashbaq.com!) you get 1-3% back on your purchase to boot!
