Occupy My Wallet 2012

I think I have been using shopping as a drug lately.  It's (it was) the holidays and a good way to cope.  Better than Oxy, right?  So for the beginning of 2012, I'm going to try a new movement:  Occupy My Wallet.  I'm going to stand by my wallet and not open it for consumption.  I'll probably fail at this attempt.

So what's the deal.  I have too much crap.  When you have too much crap, you can't keep it organized and stuff.  Then the disorganization makes you crazy and makes you just want to leave your house to buy more crap to keep unorganized.

So in January - I'm going to make a conscious effort to not buy anything other than groceries, gas & food.  I can't take away the take out.  Even the best homemakers need breaks.  What I can do without though is the random purchases from Lowe's, Michael's and everywhere else though.

We have more arts & craft supplies to last us until eternity.  We have toiletries up the wazoo.  Even my kitchen cabinets are getting zoo like.  I need the crap to go away.  So that's what I'll be working on in January.  I'll still post deals around.  Why not?  I enjoy it.

This isn't a resolution.  It's just a cleanse.  I need to cleanse my homelife.  So for the next 31 days I will try to do just that.  Maybe during this cleanse I can save a few bucks too.  It's time to take back my wallet.

Hallalujah! Our Braintree K-Mart is Safe-for now! (And a great deal, of course!)

I hate K-mart.  I've hated it for a long time.  It just gives me the heebie jeebies.  Fine.  Call me a snob.  I don't care.  But I know a few people who love the K.  (Holla Saj!)

Well for anyone interested, K-mart/Sears said 2 days ago that they are going to shut about 100-120 stores.  Oh so sad.  Luckily, none in Massachusetts are being shut in this first round.  Or so says the Boston Herald.

Speaking of K-Mart - check out this AWESOME deal!

Only $6.49!  Holla!  Originally $12.99, this is marked at 50%.  So move over Coach - you have competition from the K-mart Playboy line!  Actually - if you have a love for the Playboy Bunny, K-mart has 187 items with it.  SEE!  I DON'T LIE PEOPLE!

And if you want to smell like "Play it Sexy" - here you go.  Only $16 for Hugh Juice:

Holla for the Big K!

Groupon Discriminates RedHeads! (and a deal on pumpkin facials!)

So a local spa - Meridians in Weymouth is offering a Groupon Now! Deal.  You know what these are?  They are deals that are typically for that day only.  Or restaurants will do lunch specials or whatever.  It helps if you have a smart phone to find these deals.  It's for today only.  Get pumpkin smeared on your face for $49.

Today, Meridians is doing a 1 Hour Pumpkin Puree Facial with Firming Mask.    That sounds awesome - no seriously.  I hope it's cinnamon scented.  But look at the picture they use:

Image_meridians_medium

Seriously?  It's like saying "Hey Pumpkin Heads!  Come on in and let us smear pumpkin puree all over your face.  Then you'll match!  Ha ha ha ha ha!!"

Very funny Groupon.  Not amused with the pumpkin thing and red-head correlation.

So if you are bored today and have $50 just laying around (I'm sure you do!) - go get a Pumpkin Facial!

Lowe's: Poker Santa only $35!

Zoomed: Gemmy 5-1/2' Inflatable Santa and Deer Playing Poker

Check out this gem!  For only $35 - it can be yours!  I think it was sold for either $75 or $90 before the holidays.  Nothing says "Let's celebrate the birth of Jesus" quite like a Texas Hold 'Em Poker Game!  Oops - I mean North Pole Hold 'Em.  If you can't find it at your friendly Lowe's - you can buy it online.  I don't think there are any shipping promos right now - so your best bet is to buy online and pick up in store.  Hurry!  This gem is going to sell out!  (no really, it will).

Michaels Phone App: One of my FAVORITE things ever

Michaels opened on Route 3A in Weymouth a few months back.  I love it.  I don't' know why.  I guess homemakers just have to like crafty stuff.  It's a great, quick stop for birthday gifts.  It has baking needs.  It has holiday decorations.  I just love it.

BUT!  The best thing I love about Michaels is their iPhone/other phone app.  If you have not downloaded this thing - you need to.

That's what it looks like.  The best little tab is the "Coupons" tab.  It has all the weekly coupons on it - so there is no need to remember that coupon from the ad.  The only draw back is that once you use that coupon that week, it goes away.  But yeah - if you are using more than one coupon a week, you probably need a Michaels intervention.

MyPublisher: Free photo book or calendar (TODAY ONLY)

An Offer Of Your Choice!

Use code YEAREND241 for a free photo book or calendar!  Expires 12/31!   I have no idea what the shipping charge is (which you have to pay).  I'm just too lazy to try to figure that out right now.

Preventative Maintenance is Key!

Little known fact:  I met my husband at diesel mechanic school.  For real.  It was love at first site while we were slaving over a greasy & smelly 5-ton truck.  Oh the good old days.  How I miss them.

Fast forward 13 years later.  I'm no longer any sort of mechanic.  The once boytoy of my mechanic days is now my husband.  He's still sort of a mechanic of a different breed.

Anyways.  What's the point of this?  Oh yes.  My husband is extremely anal about automotive maintenance.  He yells at me every chance I get if I don't get my oil changed on time.  He drops insane cash getting the 30K, 60K, 90K, 120K, etc. etc. services done.

As much as I hate to admit it (because I rarely ever have to) - he is really right about being anal over maintenance.  Our lovely Jeep Liberty is about to turn 8 years old and it's never had a problem.  The only time that beloved gray beauty has been man-handled by a mechanic is by getting it's oil change or tires rotated.  Sure, we got new tires for it - but that just comes with owning a car.

I'm going to go knock on wood now - I'll probably break down over the weekend.

Johnnie's Foodmaster - XL Shrimp @ $4.99/lbs! Wowzers!

There's other Johnnie's around the Boston Metro area - but if you aren't on the South Shore, then you're just wrong.

Why yes!  It's a tricycle with no pedals build for two!  Make the most of your health insurance with this purchase - because I know that if I attempted to put both of my sons on this - at least one would wind up with a broken arm and probably a bunch of broken teeth on both of them.  Oh and there would be screaming.  Lots & lots of screaming.  This contraption looks so cute and innocent.  But I just have this feeling when I look at it.  Any toy that makes my kids go within 10 feet of each other is pretty much a deathtrap for them.

FREE FUN REMINDER: LIBRARIES!

Libraries rock.  They are free - well only if you pay by the rules.  I'm always a day or late over due with books so I usually have to cough up anywhere from .40 cents to about 2 bucks every now and then.

They are chocked full of events these days, are starting to expand their Kindle downloads (which are free), and usually have more than just books to entertain the wee little ones.

Staples Rewards on your Phone!

Have you ever found yourself in Staples and thought "Gee Whiz!  I forgot my Staples Rewards!" or "I wonder if I have any Staples Rewards to redeem!".  Well I have.  Seriously.

So a few weeks back, I was in this situation.  Since I'm addicted to my iPhone, I decided to just look up my rewards on Safari.  It's easy - go to www.Staplesrewards.com.

After you log in, you can keep it so your phone knows you.  Now, whenever I go to Staples, I don't even print out my rewards - I just pull them up on my phone for the cashier to scan.  See:

Isn't that cool?  What's even cooler is that because of this blog post, I learned how to take a screen shot on my iPhone.  Simple things amuse me.  Save paper, save time, use your iPhone!

The Best Advice I Never Got: Join a Gym After You Have a Baby

It's amazing to admit that come March, I will have been a happy, perky, devoted little homemaker for 6 years.  I gave up my prestigious job in lieu of raising little trolls, cooking, cleaning and goofing off on the internet.  Okay, well I never had a real prestigious job and the trolls are actually 2 little boys.  But you get the picture.

Don't get me wrong - it was fun having two little rascals drooling, pooping and goo-ing at me for those first 2 years.  Like most young adults though - we don't have grandparents/uncles/aunts who are just sitting at home, twiddling their thumbs waiting for me to pawn off our children on them at a moments notice.  They have jobs, lives and whatnot.  So as cute and cuddly as my babies were - I was with them a good 10 hours a day, every day for what seemed like forever.

2 1/2 years, I realized the junk in my trunk was growing at an exponential rate.  My local Y was a whopping $89 a month and at the time, I really thought that was a lot to take out of our monthly budget.  But the junk was bothering me and I sucked it up.

The hidden benefit of joining my local YMCA was the "free" childcare in the cost of it.  With the household membership, it includes up to 2 hours of childcare every day (up to 3 kids).  Seeing as neither one of my kids were ever really "dumped off" somewhere without me besides family, it was a big transition - mostly for me.  At the time, kid #1 was 2 1/2 and kid #1 just turned 1.  Kid #1 had a little time adjusting to this new routine and kid #2 jumped right in and loved it.

Well regardless - the point of this babbling was I really wish someone told me to join a gym a lot sooner in my parenthood - and convince me it was worth the money.  I usually don't take advantage of the full 2 hours (1 1/2 is more like it), but the mini break from the kids is well worth the money and cheaper than any other day care option out there (as long as you don't mind actually working out while your kids are getting watched....).  It is also really good for them to socialize with other kids, let their energy out, and build up their tiny little immune systems (although those poor ladies are constantly rubbing down every surface with Lysol wipes, you know kid places are all germ central spots).

So to all the new mothers out there who stumbled across my blog - remember your mental health is important too.  Take some money and time to remember that and I'm just throwing it out there that joining a gym may be a great option to help you stay focused and recharged so you can have a nice piping hot dinner waiting on the table when your husband walks through that door from work every night.  Don't forget to use your apron!

Generic Spices: No Really, They Do Just Fine.

One thing I am really amazed at is how expensive spices are at the grocery store.  Now granted, I'm no gourmet cook, but I have had delicious dishes come out of using spices from CVS (they're about a $1), The Christmas Tree Shop (.89 cents) and of course, my beloved Dollar Tree (obviously, $1).

Don't worry - I won't call you ghetto or gross if you admit that you use generic spices.  I do.  And well yeah, I am kind of trashy.  So take what you will from this post.

I want to show you though how generic spices did not effect my cookie making this year.  I use Almond Extract a lot.  Seriously.  Weird, I know.  Last Christmas, I made cookies using McCormack's over priced bottle of Almond Goodness.

See:

Now this year, I used Almond Extract bought at my favorite family-friend Dollar Tree on Route 3A in Weymouth.  Here are this year's creations:

and....

My review:  all the cookies tasted and looked the same.  Only I saved about $5 for that little 1 ounce bottle by just picking it up at the Dollar Tree instead of neighboring Stop & Shop.

So if you haven't crossed over to the dark side of generic spices, you should.  It will be our little secret.  I just leave my generic spices in the container and am proud of them when company is over  -  but if you like to keep the look of class and whatnot - feel free to just dump them into a nice spice holder or whatever spice contraption your husband or kids got you for Christmas.

Cheap Lego Storage: $34.99 @ Michaels

I love Legos.  More than my sons.  Storing Legos?  Not so much.  I have no idea the right way to do it or whatever.  I am pretty inexperienced in this though as my sons are just now getting into Legos - but we already have 1000s upon 1000s of them.  It's sick really.

Yesterday I scored this colorful 10-drawer scrapbooking storage unit for said Legos for only $29.99 at Michael's.  Unfortunately, I used a coupon ($5/$25) that was only good yesterday - but $34.99 is still a great deal for this - it's ticketed price is $69.99.  It's usually on sale for about $41.99 (yes, I've been stalking this piece of plastic for awhile now).

It's nice because it's partially color coded.  I put ours:  Red, Orange, Yellow, White, Green, (empty for now), Blue, (empty for now), Purple/gray, and Black.

I'm slowly growing my little Lego compound...oh, I mean my kids' Lego compound....

And in case you can't get enough of Lego storage, here's one more look at the glory of it all:

Now I have also picked up 15-cup "Rubbermaid" type containers at my favorite Dollar Tree.  These are used to try to keep the sets in place.  That isn't going so well - so when my son tries to rebuild the set, he can go to the color-coded drawers to try to find his missing pieces.

They look similar to this:

If you dig really tacky Lego looking stuff, you can nab THIS LEGO STORAGE UNIT on Amazon right now for $69.99 (reg. $139.99):

Lastly, our "Homemade Lego Table" was a hit with the kids this Christmas.  And it was VERY EASY to make.

Torn Between Two Lovers: Shaw's Grocery Game vs. Stop & Shop Gas Points

I'm torn between two lovers these days.  Let me explain....

Lover #1:

Shaw's "Wish Big, Win Big Game"  (I pride myself in earning 56 game pieces in a single shopping trip a few weeks back...)

Lover #2:

Stop & Shop's Gas Points/the Addition of a Stop & Shop gas station in Quincy, MA.

What is a homemaker to do?  I love the thrill and excitement of Shaw's mini-gambling thing going on.  But I also love to save money on gas.  Stop & Shop gas is already super cheap, so being able to nab gallons of it for under $3/gallon makes me all giddy.

Shaw's Wish Big, Win Big sweepstakes ends February 9th - so maybe I'll just get my legalized gambling on until then.  I haven't won anything yet...but gosh darn it, I'm close!

Remember the Smaller Shops this Christmas Eve - the bargains are there!

I stumbled out of bed at 6:35 this morning and hit the road at 6:40, not caffeinated.  With sweatpants on, I headed out to Roxie's - and got a roast of some sorts.  I went to Shaw's last night and was not impressed with their selection.  Not only did I think most of the meat was overpriced for the quality, but all of the roasts were HUGE.  I didn't need a 6 pound thing at $7/lbs.

So I was happy at Roxie's - nabbed a great little rump roast for only $3.19/lbs.  Plus - it looks 10 times better than the things at Shaw's.  Sorry Shaw's.

I noticed that Fratelli's Pastry shop across the street was packed when I left Roxie's a little after 7.  Shamefully, I've never been to Fratelli's.  So the thought of fresh baked something or other enticed me.  The place was packed, but the customer service was outstanding.  They had about 8 people fetching orders and it was relatively speedy for the crowd.

Check out this crazy bargain!  This huge loaf of bread was only $2.25.  Seriously.  Not on some reduced rack.  Not some special.  Just what was there.  I wish I can tear it apart now, but no.  I'll try to resist my gluten urges until dinner time.

Being Cheap: A Homemade Lego Table

My kids are currently obsessed with Legos.  And I have to admit - I kind of am too.  Scouting out great deals for sets and going through our "not-so-organized" huge big of Legos when Kid #1 wants to rebuild something.

I have two different types of kids over here.  Kid #1 (who is a wise 5 year-old) loves to have instructions and will just sit there for hours building some monstrous Lego creation by the book.  Kid #2 (who is a wild 4 year-old) likes to just build whatever his heart's desire is at that moment at time.  Instructions are for wussies should be his motto.  Regardless, I have a good chunk of Lego sets ready for Santa to wrap up for Christmas.

On December 13th, the kids and I were at Barnes & Noble.  They had a Lego table and my kids immediately flocked to it.  That's when I got the bright idea to get them a Lego table for Christmas.  A quick search of Amazon only yielded over-priced pieces of crap.

Once I got them to bed, my OCD kicked in and I googled "how to make a Lego table".  I found a GREAT post about it:  Angry Julie's Incredibly Great Write Up on How to make a Lego Table.

She used a $10 end table from Ikea.  But I wanted something bigger because I always have to keep up.  So I had my heart set on going to Ikea to buy THIS $20 COFFEE TABLE TO GLUE LEGO BOARDS TO.

My cheap self though had to do a quick sweep through Craig's List first.  Luck was on my side.  This is rare.  Especially when I get these crazy thoughts in my head about "big projects that need to be done in a set amount of time".

A very nice lady sold me this barely used Mammut Table from Ikea and 2 chairs for only $15.  Had I gone to Ikea and bought them new, it would have ran me $64.97 plus tax.

Usually Lego baseboards (the 10"X10" ones) are around $8-$9 at most paces.  Each.  Seriously?  That much money for a piece of plastic?  Anyways, my cheap self was able to find them at Lego.com for $4.99 each.  We'll use 4 of them to make a 20"X20" work surface:

Our epic project should start tonight.  The husband was in charge of buying the adhesive.  This is what he got (it was about $3):

So when all is said and done, this table will have cost just under $40 and will have been relatively easy following the directions in Angry Julie's blog.  Will it be absolutely perfect?  No.  For instance, we have a pink chair.  Not sure which boy will get that one - but hoping the excitement of the Lego table will make that fact intangible in their little minds - and better than spending $160 on a comparable set (that would be THIS IMAGINARIUM ONE) .

**Another Lego Note - I have found that the Dollar Tree sells 15 cup "Rubbermaid" type containers which are perfect for most sets.  Of if you want to organize your Legos by color, these would be great as well.***
