So the first month of the New Year is coming to a close. At the beginning of the year, I made some crazy goal to lose some weight this year (mostly just to teach myself to eat healthier), while maintaining a normal grocery budget of $5,000 this year. So how did I do?
First, I average in my head $416 per month for my goal of grocery spending. If I spend $416 a month, that will be about $5000 for the year (okay, - $4992 to be exact, but I don't like dealing with fractions and decimals and all that other nonsense). For January 2010, I spent $326 ($90 under budget). This is outstanding because I bought 2 cases of diapers (just under $50) and kitty litter ($10.49).
I also have lost 7.2 lbs in January by following Weight Watchers rather religiously. My entire goal for weight loss is somewhere between 20-25 lbs. I don't expect my weight loss to be this much from here on out - but that's cool. Slow and steady wins the race. Overall, I'm extremely happy with how January 2010 turned out in this goal of mine.
How's every else doing? Did you set any goals for 2010? My Weight Watchers leader today said that week 5 of goal setting is when people tend to lose motivation. I'm not sure if she meant WWs or in goals in general. I feel like I have gained motivation the last week. I feel like some obnoxious, perky cheerleader who is all gung-ho about life. I'm not sure what is wrong with me.

Recipe of the Week - Chicken Cacciatore
Since joining Weight Watchers, I've made this recipe about 3 or 4 times. We love it. In fact, since cooking with a lot more vegetables, both my husband and I agree that eating spaghetti with plain old jarred tomato sauce is not filling and kind of "blah". This doesn't take much time and I find that using frozen vegetables in most dishes is easy and just as tasty.
Chicken Cacciatore (took this out of the Week 1 book)
Serves: 1 (double, triple or quadruple recipe based on your needs)
Points: 8
(Red writing is my Shaw's price babble)
1 tsp Olive Oil (If you don't have, hook up the Bonelli BOGO free sale this week)
1 tsp minced garlic ($1)
2 Tbsp chopped onion ($1 for 2 lbs)
1/4 cup chopped green peppers (we use frozen - $1.33 for the Shaw's bag.)
1/2 cup sliced mushrooms ($1 per pack)
4 oz boneless, skinless chicken breast ($1.88/lbs at Shaw's this week)
1/2 cup diced tomatoes (we get a flavor to give it more umph. Nothing on sale this week, so scope out the isle. A 15 oz. can is 1 1/2 cups. A 28 oz can is 3 cups. We usually store the remaining of a 28 oz can in a plastic container in the fridge).
1 cup cooked spaghetti (I use the Ronzoni Smart Taste that is $1 a box this week - with coupon at http://www.ronzoni.com/)
Cost: ?? If you had to buy all these ingredients, you'd have enough supplies to make this dish 2 or 3 times (and then some).
Heat the oil in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Add garlic, onion, peppers and mushrooms. Saute 4 minutes until mushrooms release their juice. Add chicken. Saute until golden brown on all sides, about 5 minutes. Add tomatoes. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, simmer 15 minutes. Place spaghetti in a shallow bowl. Top with chicken and vegetable mixture.
Other Notes:
- You really can't freeze mushrooms without them going gross (so says google searches I've done on it). Mushrooms can last a while if stored properly though in the refridgerator.
- I've made up bags of garlic, onion and peppers already measured out and froze them together. That way I just add mushrooms to it. Makes the prep work a little easier.
- I never buy frozen chopped onion, but I always chop and freeze onions laying around the house.
Another thing I have learned since this whole "healthy eating" kick of mine - I used to always use 1 lbs of meat in every dish I made no matter what. But now, I find that I'm only using 8 oz in most recipes. When I buy, say a 3 lbs pack of chicken, I just cut it all up in pieces and freeze in 6 Ziplock freezer bags. So even though I'm spending more on vegetables, I'm stretching our meat consumption. I'm finding it sort of evens out in the budget aspect.

Harvard Art Museum - FREE Admission CORRECTION!
I wrote a post about free admission at certain Cambridge museums about a week ago (CLICK HERE to see what inspirational things I had to say about the People's Republic of Cambridge).
The Harvard Art Museum's admissions policy has recently changed and it is no longer free to the general public on Saturday mornings. Instead, they offer free admission during that time to Massachusetts residents with valid ID. Admission prices and policy can be found on their website, BY CLICKING THIS LINK.
Furthermore, their institution name is now the Harvard Art Museum, rather than Harvard University Art Museums, and with that name change came their new public website: http://www.harvardartmuseum.org/.
Many thanks to the fine people at the Harvard Art Museum for informing us about this!

Adult Fleece Jackets - $3.99 ea @ The Children's Place
The Children's Place is having their Monster Sale. I'm not sure if people have noticed this, but they have a bunch of adult fleece jackets (see that picture to the left?). They are normally $34.99, but on clearance for $3.99! Yes, $3.99! And again, these are ADULT (MEN's) sizes. Click HERE to see them on the website!
If you want to shop the Monster Sale at The Children's Place, go through Cashbaq if you are a member (you get 3% back). Or not. At checkout, enter code C99AA to give you 15% off (so these jackets are actually $3.39).
These would make a good Christmas gift - if you have room to store them. I grabbed one for myself and the husband.
The Children's Place gives you $5 shipping on all orders. Personally I think the kids stuff is still a little high - but it goes to 75% soon. Just thought the adult jackets were a super good deal.

BJ's Run Yesterday!
This is a good trip to show how you can stack MFCs with BJ's coupons.
Total Before Savings: $84.09
Coupons Used: $16.79
Cash OOP: $67.30
1 Box of Luvs - $29.99 ($5/1 BJ's Coupon, $2/1 MFC) $22.99 for 180 diapers (size 4)
1 Capri Sun Waters - $7.49
1 Wonder Kids 2 pack - $3.19
2 12 oz Sargento Twin Pack Shredded Mozzarella Cheese - $6.99 ($1.50/1 BJ's Coupon, $1/2 MFC) $4.49 for 6 cups of cheese (it's like getting cheese for $1.49 per 8 oz bag at Shaw's)
BJ's Apple Juice - $3.99
2 lbs Smart Balance Tubs - $6.29 ($1.50/1 BJ's coupon, $1/2 MFC) $3.79 for 2 1 lbs containers
2 lbs Butterball Deli Turkey packs - $6.99 ($1/2 MFC) $5.99
2 Half & Halves - $1.79 ea
1 lbs LOL Deli Cheese - $3.52 ($1/1 lbs BJ's coupon at door) $2.52
2 2 dozen Eggs - $3.49 ea
Arnold Sandwich Thins - $2.29
Thomas High Fiber English Muffins - $2.79 (FREE when you buy Sandwich Thins coupon at door) FREE!
Things From This Trip:
- BJ's has some killer coupons at the door this week! There was actually just a $1/1 lbs of LOL Cheese in the paper. Couple this with the $1/1 lbs at the door and you are talking $1.50 for a pound of American Cheese!
- Just throwing another plug out there for Luvs diapers. Totally underrated. I never have leaks with them on my 2 year old. They do leak from time to time with my almost 4 year old at night (he can't seem to wake up to go to the bathroom although he's been potty trained for over a year) - but honestly, I don't think most diapers can hold 4 year-old's tinkles and we've made big improvements in this department by just forcing him to go before bed and limiting his liquids after dinner. Sign up for MFCs mailed to you at Luvs.com. Couple these with the BJ's coupons that get mailed out and you're talking a great deal on diapers. This trip, my cost per diaper was 12.7 cents for a size 4. Find out how much you are paying for diapers by diving the cost of your package of diaper by the number of diapers in the package. Then you click on THIS handy dandy chart to see what the price is to beat to "be a good deal". Thanks Baby Cheapskate! So on this chart, beating 21 cents for a Luvs Size 4 diaper is a "good deal". This makes me feel all good and mushy inside since I got mine for under 13 cents each - and almost always do by stacking coupons at BJ's.

Recipe - For the Roxie's Shopper!
If you are part of Roxie's TLC program, then you might be wondering what to do with a Free package of Hillshire Farms kielbasa. First, when I went, I was pleasantly surprised that they had Lite and Turkey Sausage varieties. I got Lite. Then I made the best dish with it.
Here's what you can make by buying stuff at Roxie's this week:
Chicken with Andouille and Peppers (Shortcuts book, page 76)
Serves: 4
Points: 4
1/2 pound chicken boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut into 1 1/2 inch pieces (.85 at Roxie's)
1/4 pound of andouille or other smoked sausage (I used the free Hillshire Farms kielbasa - it was delicious) (free)
1 onion, thinly sliced (.20 cents at Roxie's)
1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced (.50 cents at Roxie's)
1/2 tsp Cajon seasoning (I used 1/4 tsp Goya Adobo & 1/4 tsp Chili Powder)
1 14 1/2 oz can diced tomatoes ($1 at Shaw's, but you should stock up when they are on sale and have this in your cabinet)
Cost: No more than $2.55
1. Spray skillet with nonstick spray and set over medium-high heat. Add the chicken and cook, stirring occasionally until browned, 2-3 minutes. Transfer to plate. Add the suasage to the skillet and cook, stirring occasionally, until browned, 3-4 minutes. Transfer to plate.
2. Wipe or wash skillet. Spray with nonstick cooking spray. Set on medium heat. Add onion, bell pepper and seasoning. Cook, stirring occassionally until the vegetables are tender, about 5 minutes. Add the tomatoes and bring to a boil. Add the chicken and suasage; return to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer, covered, until the chiken is cooked through, 6-8 minutes longer.
I cooked rice with this dish. 1/2 cup cooked rice is 2 points.

Things From this Trip:
- If you have an MFC that will double (like my Quaker Quakes), it will become a "Money Maker" if the Pre-Sale Price is greater than the doubled amount. The presale price on the Quakes is $1.99. So with a .75/1 MFC, it doubled to $1.50. They were only $1 last week - so I "made" .50 on each of them. The Fruit2O only doubled to $1.25 because $1.25 is the normal price. Get it?
- Fat Free Ricotta is pretty darn nasty. I don't think I'll be buying that again. I need the fat to make it taste good.
- The Weight Watchers rolls are absolutely divine. Only 2 points each and they taste like normal sandwich rolls. Wonderful!

Old Navy Cardholders get 25% Off
I got a postcard in the mail. I feel so special. From January 28-31, you get 25% off your entire purchase at Old Navy, Gap and Banana Republic when you use their respective credit card. The postcard doesn't look like a coupon. It looks more just like a "matter of fact". Something to keep in mind if you are thinking of getting your clothes shopping on soon.

Scored the Jackpot at Mother's Consignment Shop!
So every time I see my mother, she is always trying to pawn off her stuff on me. I don't know if this is what normal parents do. It doesn't really feel natural, but whatever, I'll take it. I've been a proud receipient of lots of odd crap from her through the years. It's like going consignment shopping at her house without having to actually pay money. Maybe I'm her charity case? She probably writes the stuff she gives me off her taxes.
Well anyways, I hit the jackpot this time around:
Well anyways, I hit the jackpot this time around:
7 (yes 7!!) Weight Watchers cookbooks! I will now become a Weight Watcher recipe cooking fool! Have you ever been given someone's "crap" but just absolutely loved it? I find that a lot of times, other people's crap is certainly my treasure.

Freeze Vegetables to Reduce Your Grocery Budget
One thing I am trying to do lately is to freeze vegetables before they go super bad. Like every vegetable. I'll admit - sometimes I get giddy when veggies rot because that's more to add to my compost bin - but that's not very cost efficient of me, huh? So my first freezer sensation this year was scallions. I needed like 1/4 cup for a recipe but I got about 2 cups in the package I bought. I don't use scallions all that much. So I googled it. I could just put them in a container and freeze them up to 2 months.
Not only are frozen vegetables pretty much just as healthy as fresh vegetables, you prep them before hand - which saves time in the future. It also ensures that you get more bang for your buck out of them. I had just under a pound of carrots today that I thought would go bad before I could use them - so I blanched them, shredded them, and now have about 3 cups of shredded carrots in my freezer. Good for that Easy Fried Rice Recipe and other dishes and soups as well.
Here is a good list of how to blanch certain vegetables to prep them for freezing. A lot of things I just throw in the freezer, but I do blanch carrots and potatoes. I don't blanch things like broccoli and onions. If in doubt though, google "Can I freeze 'whatever'" and you should get some semi-intelligent responses.

Recipe of the Week - Easy Fried Rice
This week's Weight Watcher recipe (which comes off the WW site), is Easy Fried Rice. I actually made this last week and it came out really good. I will be making it again. My husband and I ate it as a side dish with a Gorton's Fish. The whole meal was 5 points. You could add chicken or shrimp to make it more of a main dish, use it as a side, or even eat 2 servings as a meal (it's only 3 pts. per serving).
POINTS® Value: 3
Servings: 6
Preparation Time: 8 min
Cooking Time: 10 min
Level of Difficulty: Easy
Ingredients
2 spray(s) cooking spray
2 large egg(s), lightly beaten
1 cup(s) carrot(s), shredded (a pound is .99 at Shaw's)
1 cup(s) scallion(s), sliced, divided (probably no more than $2 at Shaw's. You can actually freeze scallions! I Googled it last week and have a container in my freezer. You can buy a big package at Roxie's for $1.49)
3 cup(s) cooked white rice (Use Brown - on sale at Shaw's for $1.89)
1/2 cup(s) frozen green peas, thawed (Shaw's Frozen - $1)
1/4 cup(s) low-sodium soy sauce, or to taste (should have in your fridge)
Cost: No more than $5.88
Instructions
Coat a large nonstick skillet with cooking spray; warm pan over medium-high heat. Add eggs; tilt pan so that eggs cover bottom.
When eggs start to set, break them up into pieces with a heat-proof spatula or wooden spoon. Cook until eggs are cooked through, about 1 minute more; remove eggs them from skillet and set aside.
Off heat, recoat same skillet with cooking spray; set over medium-high heat. Add carrots and all but 2 tablespoons scallions; sauté until carrots are crisp-tender, about 2 to 3 minutes.
Stir in cooked rice, peas and soy sauce; cook until heated through, stirring once or twice, about 1 minute. Gently stir in cooked egg and remaining scallions; heat through. Yields about 3/4 cups per serving.

Get a Free Pound of Dunkin Donuts Coffee!
So I probably tricked some people by reading this with the title - but if you are generous enough to donate blood in January, you get a voucher for a free pound of Dunkin Donuts coffee (at New England Blood Drives)! I went yesterday. Right after, I swung by Dunkin Donuts and grabbed my bag so I wouldn't forget about the voucher. The highlight of last night's blood donation was talking to some guy - who obviously just got out of an office. He asked me if I was waiting for a long time. I replied "Not too long, maybe 20 minutes, but I'll do anything for some free coffee." He replied (very seriously), "Well whatever gets you to come in. It's kind of sad that it takes giving something to people in order to give." I really tried not to laugh - but come on! I just smiled and told him I was joking, but he was not amused with my coffee prostitution humor.
Now anyone can go to the Red Cross website and see the benefits of donating blood (i.e. saving lives, helping up to 3 people with your donation, etc.). But what are some other benefits?
- If you have kids, it's a good reason to escape them for an hour, hour and a half.
- You meet some interesting people.
- Almost every month they have some promo.
- You get free cookies, juice and water.
- Your blood gets tested for things like HIV and other diseases. All for free. And they'll let you know if you pop positive for something.
- You learn if you have strong veins or not. I do not. Usually they can hardly find them.
- You can laugh at the people who are too impatient to wait and bother the workers (if you never donated before, it might be a good idea to bring a book, magazine or have a fancy phone where you can goof off in case of a line).
- Last nice, I was nice to one of the donors and she told me some area places she has done her son's birthday parties that aren't too expensive - with reviews and prices. This information is priceless.
- A pint of blood (the amount that you give) weighs just over a pound. Instant weight loss people!
So go my friends. Donate. Drink Coffee. Love Life!

Still Composting Away.
I started composting about 10 months ago. I'm still going strong. It's actually a very easy habit to get into. It's cost me ZERO dollars. And it's something that I don't even think twice about now - when I cut up vegetables or dump my coffee grounds - they just go into my little compost bin. When it's full, I empty it outside. Even my husband does it - and he's the most anti-organic person out there.
How I did it? I grabbed an old raggity garbage can (we had 6 of them - we didn't need 6 garbage cans). I drilled like 100 holes in it with my husband's cordless drill. I put the lid on it, and VOILA! A Compost Bin.
I'm on my 3rd round of filling up this bad boy. The compost doesn't decompose as fast in the winter. But I was able to put it relatively close to my backdoor (no fruit flies and other weird bugs around it in the winter).
I'm getting excited about gardening again. Why? I don't know. I want to be better than last year. I think I'll do more tomatoes. Maybe I'll experiment with random things. I don't know. I still have about 5 months until I can plant so maybe I should find something else to get excited about.

Gordon Grilled Fish - $2.66 (.50/1 MFC from paper) $1.66
2 Pennsylvania Dutch Egg Noodles (Yolk Free) - .99 ($1/2 MFC from paper) .49 ea
1 Cottonelle Wipes - $2.79 ($2/1 MFC spit out at Shaw's register 2 weeks ago) .79
2 Nature's Pride Double Fiber Bread - $2.50 (2 .75/1 MFCs Double printed 2 weeks ago) $1 ea!
Things I Learned -
- Yey! This CAT doubles!
- Watch out on the fruit snacks. Some varieties have a PSP of $2.50. This might mess up your scenarios if you grab these. The Spiderman, Scooby Doo, & WonderPets were all $2.99. Other varieties were $2.50.
- The Steamers are a great deal. People might not know this, but they are just pure vegetables with "a trace of salt". There is no sauce or anything like that in them (unless you grab those varieties). So if you need frozen vegetables for recipes, these are a great option this week. Especially with all the printable coupons on the 4 known coupon sites.
- Do you not have kids? What are you going to do with those box tops? You could donate them to your local school or a relative/friend with kids. But if you are looking to make a few bucks, apparently there is a market for them on Ebay. Sounds crazy, but they go for almost face value. I would never buy them off Ebay (If I wanted to give extra money to my kid's school, I'd just fork over the cash) - but apparently some schools in America compete to be "the best" and all that other crazy stuff. So if you do a few rounds this week and have a bunch of those 50 Box Tops coupons (worth $5 for a school) - consider selling them as a bundle on Ebay.
- This is a great example for those who say "I don't cut coupons because I eat healthy and there aren't coupons for healthy products." Besides the fruit snacks (which, are fat free, so they have that going for them) - everything I bought is "healthy" - at least in my book. I used a coupon for every single item I purchased today.

A Friendly's Cone Giveaway!
I'm giving away 5 Friendly's Prize Packs! It's actually just 2 coupons for a Free Cone. They actually felt really bad about my last Friendly's giveaway mishap that they mailed me 10 Free Cone coupons to giveaway. I figured, ice cream isn't fun unless you have someone to share it with, so that's why I'm doing 5 2-packs.
How can you enter? (All Involve Leaving Comments)
1. Leave a comment with your favorite Friendly's menu item. It can be as simple as ice cream or something like those delicious cheesy waffle fries they offer.
2. Follow me on Facebook. (and leave a comment telling me)
3. Follow me on Twitter. (and leave a comment telling me)
4. Follow me on Blogger. (and leave a comment telling me)
You can enter up to 4 times (with the above mentioned methods), but can only win once. You have until midnight (EST) on Sunday, January 10th to enter. (It's easiest to leave your email address if your Blogger profile doesn't have one attached to it).
Also, check out their new promo starting this coming Monday as well: Cones for Kids are coming to our stores on 1/11! Staples - 500 Sheets Hammermill Paper for $1 after Rebate
Just got back from Staples. I had to buy more printer ink I snagged a ream of Hammermill Copy Paper for $5 with a $4 MIL rebate. I actually did the rebate online and it took about 30 seconds. A check for $4 should be coming within 4-6 weeks. $1 for 500 sheets of paper isn't bad.
I also snagged an Avery Heavy Duty binder since they are giving 100% back in Staples Rewards this week. Go. Get cheap paper!

Recipe of the Week - Chicken with Broccolli and Garlic Sauce
Here's a Weight Watchers recipe that corresponds with the sales at Shaw's this coming week. I took it off the Weight Watchers site. Another good site for "healthy" recipes is Sparkrecipes.com.
Chicken with Broccolli and Garlic Sauce
POINTS® Value: 5
Servings: 4
Preparation Time: 17 min
Cooking Time: 15 min
Level of Difficulty: Easy
Ingredients
2 tsp olive oil (should be in your pantry)
1 pound(s) uncooked boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut into 1-inch pieces ($1.88/lb)
1 tsp dried thyme, or 2 tbsp fresh minced thyme, or to taste (should be in your pantry)
1/2 tsp table salt (should be in your pantry)
1/4 tsp black pepper (should be in your pantry)
3 medium garlic clove(s), minced, or more to taste (a bulb costs about .40 cents)
2 cup(s) broccoli, florets (Part of the Pick 4 deal. Grab a bag of already cut up broccoli for $2 - or you can use frozen with the Catalina deal - cheaper that way)
1 1/2 cup(s) reduced-sodium chicken broth, divided (Grab a reduced sodium can of Shaw's Brand. Should be no more than $1)
1 1/2 Tbsp cornstarch (should be in your pantry)
2 cup(s) cooked brown rice, kept hot (We buy Rice in bulk, so we have rice on hand. Not sure if most people do.)
Cost: $5.28 (assuming you have rice in your home. If not, pick up a big pack and store it.)
Instructions
Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Place chicken on a plate and season with thyme, salt and pepper. Add garlic to skillet and cook, stirring, 1 minute. Add chicken to skillet and cook until browned on all sides, stirring frequently, about 3 minutes.
Add broccoli to skillet, cover and cook 2 minutes. Add 1 cup of broth, cover and simmer until chicken is cooked through, about 5 minutes.
In a cup, dissolve cornstarch in remaining 1/2 cup of broth; add to skillet. Simmer until mixture thickens, stirring constantly, about 1 minute; serve over rice. Yields about 1 cup of chicken and broccoli and 1/2 cup of rice per serving.

$5/5 Healthy Choice Meals!
Here's a great coupon for $5 off 5 Healthy Choice frozen entrees (that's $1 off 1!). I actually somewhat like the Cafe Steamers. Click HERE for the Coupon!
I actually kind of dislike diet frozen meals. I find they are little portions, full of sodium and taste a little "blah" - but they are sometimes good to have in the freezer for emergencies. I actually don't mind Healthy Choice's Cafe Steamers too much. Those are kind of good - but again, not very big and I like to eat a lot.

Today's Boston Globe Coupons!
I just wanted to give you an example of the things I cut coupons for. If you're looking to eat healthy, January is a great time for "healthy" coupons. Of course, my version of healthy is someone else's version of junk food. Here are the coupons I cut from today's paper:
$1/1 Yoplait Frozen Smoothie (the husband)
$1/1 Fiber One Muffins
$1/1 Fiber One Pancake Mix
$1/1 Fiber One Yogurt
$1/4 Progresso Soups
$1/2 Green Giant Steamers
$1/3 Green Giant Boxes
$1/1 YoPlus
2 Yoplait "Buy 6, Get 1 Free"
$1/2 Special K
$1/1 Uncle Ben's Rice
$1/2 Penn. Dutch Egg Noodles
$1/5 Campbell's Condensed Soups
$1/10 Campbell's Condensed (Tomato & Chicken Noodle)
$1/4 Campbell's Select Harvest Soups
$1/4 Campbell's Healthy Request
$1/2 Chunky Soups
$1/2 Healthy Harvest
$1/2 Sargento Cheese Snacks
.55/1 Healthy Ones Lunch Meat
.50/1 Gordon's Grilled Fish
$1/2 Boca Burgers
$2/Crystal Light & 100 Cal. Snacks
$1/10 Dannon Yogurts
$1/2 Healthy Choice Soups
$1/2 Healthy Choice Frozen Meals
$1/1 Tyson Grilled & Ready product
$1/1 DiGiorno 200 cal. Pizza
$1/2 Jennie-O Turkey products
$1/2 Barilla Plus Pasta
$1/1 Fiber One Cottage Cheese
Okay. So there you have it. Now am I running to Shaw's tomorrow to buy all this crap? No. Truth be told, I'll probably toss half of these coupons when they pass their expiration date. Somethings I probably will use - the Yoplait & Dannon yogurt ones for sure. Most of these don't expire for over a month - so the key to really save at the grocery store is to use these coupons on these products when the product is on sale. The 200 Cal DiGiorno thing - I probably won't buy that unless it goes on sale for like $2 - which is unlikely. But I'll allow it to sit in my bin for a month to rot away. Just some wishful thinking on my part.
Which ones would work this week at Shaw's?
- Dannon Yogurt - .40 cents ea on sale. $1/10 makes them .30 ea. - I think these are normally about .80 ea not on sale.
- Campbell's Condensed Soup - .69 ea on sale. $1/10 or $1/5 (not sure which varieties are on sale), makes these .49 or .59 ea. These are normally $1 or $1.50 ea (depending on variety)
- Progresso Soup - .99 ea. $1/4 makes them .74 ea. These are $2.50 not on sale.
- Crystal Light & 100 Cal. Packs - Crystal Light is $2. 100 cal Packs are $1.99. $1 ea with the $2 coupon. Both over $3 not on sale.
- Fiber One Pancake Mix - $3.29. $1/1 makes it $2.29. This might be the normal price - I have no idea.
- Special K Cereal - $2.50. $1/2 makes it $2 a box. Normal price is probably in the high $3s or $4s.
Remember too, it's not a good deal if you aren't even going to eat the products - $1 for a thing of Crystal Light is a great deal - but if you don't drink it, you just flushed a buck down Shaw's toilet.

Recipe of the Week - Slow Cooker Turkey Chili
One thing I am going to try to do - not sure how long it will last - is to find a Weight Watchers recipe each week that corrolates to sales at Shaw's. I just grab the recipes off WeightWatchers.com. Hopefully they won't sue me. As long as I credit them, I don't think they can though. Heavens know I'm not making up my own recipes!
Slow Cooker Turkey Chili
POINTS® Value: 7
Servings: 4
Preparation Time: 8 min
Cooking Time: 360 min
Level of Difficulty: Easy
Seasoned canned tomatoes and Italian turkey sausage add instant life to chili. Try tomatoes with different seasonings to vary the flavor of your chili.
Ingredients
1 pound(s) raw turkey sausage, hot-Italian variety (substitute Shady Brook Farms Ground Turkey that is on sale this week for $2.99 - would only need to use 3/4 of the package since it's 20 oz.)
14 1/2 oz canned diced tomatoes, with garlic and onions, undrained (Shaw's Brand - .69)
15 oz canned pinto beans, undrained (Goya - .59)
14 1/2 oz canned diced tomatoes, with chilies, undrained (Shaw's Brand - .69)
1 medium onion(s), chopped (no more than .50 cents)
1/4 tsp table salt, or more to taste
1/4 tsp black pepper, or more to taste
Cost: $5.46
Instructions
Remove sausage from casing and place in a 4-quart or large slow cooker; break up meat with a spoon. Add beans, both cans of diced tomatoes with their liquid and onion; stir. (I personally would just brown the turkey in a skillet and add some spices and the onion. Then transfer with the other ingredients to slow cooker).
Cover slow cooker; cook on low setting for 5 to 6 hours. Stir in salt and pepper; garnish with chopped onion if desired and serve. Yields about 1 1/2 cups chili per serving.
You could add some rice to make it more hearty - just remember to add those points to your program.

Unveiling of the 2010 Goal...
So I wasn't sure if I was going to do some grocery spending goal for 2010. But I decided to keep it going.
This coming year, I am going to try to stick to $5,000 again. However, I impulsly joined Weight Watchers. So I'm going to try to corrolate light weight loss & healthy cooking with a budget. I want to see if someone can stick to a program like Weight Watchers and have a relatively low grocery budget. So this year, I'm going to try to concentrate on finding great deals on healthy foods at Shaw's & BJ's. I probably won't use as many coupons as I did in the past. I'll probably buy more chicken and figure out things to make with it, as I'm not the biggest fan of chicken. And I'll be honest - I like junky food. I love Hamburger Helper. I love potato chips & french fries. I love breakfast sausage. At parties, I gravitate to the fattiest, meatiest dip available to me. The carrot sticks usually just kiss my butt. So this will be pretty challenging for me.
I'm starting off this New Year weighing 162 pounds. I'm 5'7" so I really should be in the 140s. In the past 10 years, my weight has ranged from anywhere from 131 to 167 not being pregnant. With both pregnancies, I hit 185. So I'm not trying to go all Kate Moss on myself, since that would be kind of gross, but I should lose a little of this junk in my trunk. 145 should be a good point - give or take a few pounds.
I'm not taking into account my Weight Watchers fee in my grocery budget. I think of that as more of an entertainment expense! If I really want to stick to something like this, I need the weekly meetings to be accountable and all that other nonsense. I'm not good at doing things without others motivating me. Sad, but true.
So there you have it. Hopefully next year, I'll be letting you know that I was able to stick to a grocery budget of $5,000 while being 15 pounds lighter. Only time shall tell....
