When Catastrophe Hits a Bargain Hunter!

One of my biggest nightmares has come true: Our refridgerator is not fridgerating! The refridgerator part is warm (I think it's currently cooler at room temperature than in there). The freezer is on it's way to being warm (bread is defrosted in there, ice cream is soft, etc.).

I like to think of my husband as pretty handy. He tinkered around with it some last night but nothing improved. He vacuumed out all the coils, tried to see if there was some sort of fan stuck. Nothing. He thinks it might be the motor or something. The lights are still on but it just isn't gearing up.

So I think we'll be buying a new one this weekend. If anyone knows where to score a 10% Lowe's coupon, send me the link! I'll be extremely greatful! The funny thing is I think I'm more mad that I have to throw away about $40 in food. The whole dropping a few hundred on a new one isn't as bothersome. I'm just thankful we have absolutely NO meat in the house! I can deal with throwing away some yogurts and bread in the freezer...but meat. That would seriously break my heart.

Oh no! Our fridge caught itself on fire earlier this year, but it was still cold enough that we could put most of our food out in the snow and save it. I will say that Lowe's was really helpful - when they heard we had two young children and no fridge they got the new fridge delivered within 12 hours.

I don't know of any Lowe's coupons right now, but it's worth asking in the store if you have their credit card...

Also, did you know about this deal? I don't remember seeing it on your blog:

That's horrible! We are going through a similar situation. We just paid off our big freezer and have some money to put towards debt and now our oven doesn't work. Of course I didn't find out until dinner was made and ready to go in the oven. Our fridge is also on it's way out. Shop around, Lowe's, Home Depot, and Sears will price match and give an extra 10% off. Good luck!

We had a similar incident with our fridge. Did you/do you hear a clicking sound with the fridge?

All we had to do was replace the compressor switch. $35... I'd suggest calling an appliance store first. Much cheaper than buying new.

If you go to the post office and open up a change of address packet there usually is a Lowe's coupon in there.

Thanks for the comments! Now the freezer is colder than cold and the refridgerator...well isn't. I think a call to Maytag is in order. Then we'll hit lowe's...

Thanks again for all the helpful info ladies!

After some research and tinkering, the husband figured out it would be about $300 for parts. The refridgerator is 9 years old...so we went to Lowe's and just got a new one. Figured it was better to spend a few hundred more to get a new one.

I know we missed that sale Susan! So mad, but the refridgerator wasn't broke then :( My husband's cousin works at Lowe's so he was able to get us 10% off - and we got some Energy Saver rebate coming...better than nothing...

Sometimes these things just happen and you can't really do anything but just suck it up.
