For 2010, I'm going to try to stick of a grocery budget of $5,000 for the year, while doing the Weight Watchers program. I was able to stay under $5K in 2009 - now lets see if I can do it while "being healthy". In my mind, in order to stay under $5K for the year, I have to spend $416 or less per month on groceries. We're a family of 4 (me, a husband and 2 rugrats who could live off of hot dogs and brownies if I let them). We also have 2 cats. Oh and I have about 25 lbs of extra junk in my trunk. I'm trying to lose some of that even though I know the husband secretly loves it.
I am tracking my spending on THIS CHART through Google Docs.
Goal: No more than $416 per month
March - Monthly Spending (so far): $306 (updated 3/27)
February - Monthly Spending: $520
January - Monthly Spending: $326
Weight Loss since 1/1/10 - 15.4 lbs

I lost 45 lbs on Weight Watchers and have kept it off a year and a half. I am also an avid couponer. I am living proof that both efforts aren't exclusive of each other. Weight Watchers preaches the benefits of a low calorie, low fat, high fiber diet. This CAN be accomplished while trying to save money by simply being AWARE of what you are buying. It does take time: reading labels AND couponing in one shopping trip. But that drawback aside, it's almost an adventure!
